Compassionate Care Leave
If an employee needs to take time off work to care for a seriously ill family member who is at risk of dying within 26 weeks, the employer must allow up to 28 weeks of unpaid leave.
The employee needs to provide the employer with a medical certificate confirming the family member's condition.
The leave can only be taken in periods of at least one week, and the total amount of leave for all employees caring for the same family member cannot exceed 28 weeks.
The leave starts from the first day of the work week specified in the medical certificate and ends either when the family member dies or after 28 weeks, whichever comes first.
The employee must provide the employer with a copy of the medical certificate upon request.
