Family Responsibility Leave

If an employee has worked for an employer for at least two weeks, they can take time off work without pay if someone they care for is sick, injured, or has a medical emergency, or if there is an urgent matter concerning that person.

The employee can take up to three days of leave each year for any of these reasons.

The leave applies to specific family members, including the employee's:

  • spouse,

  • children,

  • parents,

  • grandparents,

  • siblings, or

  • dependents.

The employee must let their employer know before taking the leave.

The employer may ask for proof that the employee is entitled to the leave.

If the employee takes paid or unpaid leave under their employment contract, it counts as a leave entitlement.
