Compassionate Care Leave
If you have worked for an employer for at least three months and a doctor certifies that your family member has a serious medical condition and is at risk of dying within 26 weeks, you can take an unpaid leave of up to 28 weeks to provide care or support to them.
This leave can only be taken in periods of at least one week and must begin on the day the doctor's certificate is issued.
If you need to take leave after the initial 26 weeks, you don't need another certificate.
You must inform your employer as soon as possible about your intention to take leave and provide a copy of the certificate upon request.
If you stop providing care during a week of leave, your entitlement to leave continues until the end of the week and you can only return to work with your employer's agreement.
