Payment of a Wages

An employer must pay an employee for all the wages earned by the employee during a pay period within seven days after the end of that pay period.

When the employee's contract is terminated, the employer must pay the wages due to the employee up to the date of termination within one week.

An employer may pay an employee in the following ways:

  • paying the employee in person at their workplace,

  • by mail to their home address, or

  • by depositing the wages into the employee's bank account.

The payment must be made:

  • in Canadian currency,

  • by cheque, or

  • through direct deposit with the employee's consent.
