Standard Hours

In general, there is no limit on the number of hours an employee can work in a day, week, or month, except:

  • with an employee working minimum wage;

  • when the employee is under the age of 16; or

  • as stated by a different act

However, the Lieutenant-Governor in Council may establish regulations setting a maximum number of hours an employer can require an employee to work at the minimum wage rate, for certain employees or categories of employees in any industry, business, trade, or occupation.

If such regulations are in effect, any employee who works beyond the prescribed maximum hours of work must be paid at least one and a half times the minimum wage rate by the employer.
