Compassionate Care Leave

An employee may take a leave of absence from work to provide care or support to a close family member who has a serious medical condition with a significant risk of death within 28 weeks.

The leave can be up to 28 weeks and must be supported by a certificate from a qualified medical practitioner.

The leave can only be taken in periods of at least one week and must be taken within a specific time period.

The total amount of leave that can be taken by all employees caring for the same family member is limited to 28 weeks.

The employee must inform their employer as soon as possible about their intention to take the leave, and the anticipated start and end dates, and provide a copy of the medical certificate if requested by the employer.
