Long-Term Injury or Illness Leave

An employee who is seriously injured or ill can take an unpaid leave of up to 17 weeks in a 52-week period if they have been employed by the same employer for at least 90 days.

A physician must issue a certificate to show evidence that the employee is expected to be unable to work for at least two weeks.

The employee must give their employer reasonable notice and provide a copy of the physician's certificate.

The leave must be continuous unless agreed otherwise.

The employee can end the leave earlier by giving two weeks' written notice, and the employer can require a physician's certificate before the employee returns to work.
