Interpersonal Violence Leave

"Interpersonal violence" refers to various forms of violence that are committed against a person without their consent, including domestic violence, stalking, and sexual acts or acts targeting a person's sexuality, gender identity, or gender expression.

An employee is entitled to take time off from work in order to deal with the effects of interpersonal violence, such as:

  • seeking medical attention,

  • obtaining counselling,

  • relocating,

  • seeking legal or law enforcement assistance, and

  • other purposes.

The leave can be taken for up to 10 days intermittently or up to 17 weeks continuously in a 52-week period.

The first 5 days of the leave can be paid, subject to certain conditions, and the employer can require reasonable verification of the need for the leave.
