Compensation

Compensation

Victims of assault may receive compensation from the following mediums:

  1. Restitution

    • A victim of an offence may apply for restitution from the court if the accused is convicted of the offence. If restitution is granted, the convicted is required to pay compensation for damages

  2. Victims compensation program

    • The victim’s compensation program is a government board that deals with victims’ cases of serious personal injury or death and may provide compensation in cases such as:

      • victims of crime that are physically injured

      • someone who is physically injured while attempting to prevent a crime

      • witnesses of crime that resulted in death, and meets the criteria for “mental shock”

    • Compensation for medical bills, prescription, funeral expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering. If a victim has died, compensation is available for those who supported the victim or their dependents.

  3. Lawsuit

    • A victim of assault may sue the offender in a civil lawsuit for damages.

If you are interested in pursuing legal action, it is recommended that you speak with a lawyer before pursuing any action.
